Announcing PIaaS - Python Interviewing as a Service

Hello, readers,

Announcing Python Interviewing as a Service:

I'm now officially offering PIaaS - Python Interviewing as a Service. I have done it some earlier, informally, for clients. Recently a couple of companies asked me for help on this again, so I am now adding it to my list of offered services, the others being consulting (software design and development, code review, technology evaluation and recommendation) and software training.

I can help your organization interview and hire Python developer candidates, offloading (some of) that work from your core technical and HR / recruitment staff.

I can also interview on related areas like SQL and RDBMS, and Unix and Linux commands and shell scripting.

I have long-term experience in all the above areas.

To hire me for PIaaS or to learn more about it, contact me via the Gmail address on my site's contact page.

The Teachable Full-time Creator Masterclass 2019

- By Vasudev Ram - Online Python training / SQL training / Linux training

Hi, readers,

As I said a few days ago in this post:

Great Teachable offer coming in a few days ...

, here are the details for the Teachable Full-time Creator Masterclass 2019.

It will go on from 14th to 21st January 2019.

What’s the Full-time Creator masterclass?

The Full-time Creator is a free, 4-part masterclass that Teachable is hosting over the course of a week - consisting of 4 jam-packed video trainings that will be dripped out over 7 days. The ideal audience for this event includes creators (think: bloggers, coaches, experts, authors, consultants, influencers, hobbyists, offline trainers, etc.) who want to create a profitable online course, using the knowledge they already have. After the week-long masterclass, they'll be offered an opportunity to buy Teachable's service — and when they do they'll receive $4K+ in valuable bonuses for free.

After the week-long masterclass, you will be invited to sign up for Teachable.

Sign up for the Teachable Full-time Creator Masterclass 2019 here.

P.S. Although I've already been a trainer (both offline and online) for some years now, I plan to attend this Masterclass myself. I'm sure I'll pick up some useful tips that will help in my training work.

See you there.

Learning Linux? Hit the ground running with my vi quickstart tutorial. I wrote it at the request of two Windows system administrator friends who were given additional charge of some Unix systems. They later told me that it helped them to quickly start using vi to edit text files on Unix. Of course, vi/vim is one of the most ubiquitous text editors around, and works on most other common operating systems and on some uncommon ones too, so the knowledge of how to use it will carry over to those systems too.

Coursera Signature Track and Verified Certificates

Coursera Blog

Good idea, methinks. It attempts to use technology to solve the potential cheating problem with such courses, by using a typing signature and other means. If it works, it could help Coursera students in their careers.

The most powerful computer in the world (1962)

Google Europe Blog: Remembering Ferranti Atlas: the UK’s first supercomputer

Interesting article.

When in college, I spent many pleasant hours in  the stacks of the British Council Library in Chennai (Madras), reading dozens of good computer and other books.

Most of the time I used to borrow four books at a time, which was the maximum allowed :-)

Although  it's the US which is largely in the limelight nowadays in the field of computers, the U.K. did and still does contribute a lot to the field.

I cannot forget those happy, interesting and educational hours I spent reading all those books,  nor the fact that it made a lot of difference to my career.

Thanks to the people behind the British Library for that.

Nice one: Kim's Python lesson

Ned Batchelder: Kim's Python lesson

I can vibe with that (or resonate with that, as the Silly Valley folks might say ;), having done some computer training of kids at the start of my career.

Ned Batchelder was part of a cool startup, Tabblo, related to Python, photos and PDF, that was bought by HP a few years ago.

The OpenCourseWare Consortium

By Vasudev Ram

I got to know about the OpenCourseWare Consortium via visiting the Saylor Foundation site again while writing my blog post of today about the Saylor Foundation's $20,000 Open Textbook Challenge.

(The Saylor Foundation seems to be a member of the OpenCourseWare Consortium.)

The OpenCourseWare Consortium (OCWC) "is a collaboration of higher education institutions and associated organizations from around the world creating a broad and deep body of open educational content using a shared model."

Links about them:

The OpenCourseWare Consortium - About Us.

More about the OCWC.

OCWC Board of Directors.

OCWC Staff.

What is OpenCourseWare?

I guess it all started with the OpenCourseWare initiative of MIT.

Free new Computer Science course at Khan Academy

John Resig - Redefining the Introduction to Computer Science

Looks interesting. Suitable for beginners.
Its mainly programming for now but they say it will evolve into more of actual CS.

Uses some more interactive methods which may make for more motivated students and faster learning.

Hacker News thread about it:

MIT free online beginner's Python programming course

http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-00sc-introduction-to-computer-science-and-programming-spring-2011/

The course is suitable for people with no programming experience. This is part of MIT's OpenCourseWare project (OCW), via which a huge part (all?) of MIT's courses are made available free online for anyone to use.
